Sitting on Top of the World...or Maybe Just Some Trash!

Last week, we headed to the Livingston County Landfill for a little field trip. (The mystery location from my last blog) It was quite interesting. We took a bus tour to the top, which was almost as good as riding a roller coaster. It felt like we were sitting on top of the world. Okay...so maybe we weren't that high up. But we could see a good distance. The tour guy said we were probably sitting at the highest point in Livingston County. Here's some pics...

Did you know...

The landfill didn't stink! Yep, that's right. As long as all of the burners are working to burn off the methane gas that the garbage produces, it doesn't stink!

They cover the garbage with dirt almost immediately, to prevent the garbage from blowing away and critters getting to it.

Garbage in a landfill doesn't break down like we think it should. The landfill provides an airtight holding cell for the garbage. Very little light and oxygen get to the trash, which are the 2 main ingredients for garbage to break down.

The landfill can operate up until they have 30 mph sustained winds. At that point, they have to shut down because the garbage would be blowing everywhere.
